Strike A Pose

Last weekend I was chatting with some folks and someone raised one of the great existential knitblogging questions of our time…

How do you photograph your own handknit socks?

I usually go for the bend and click, but this does not show off the socks to their greatest advantage. Other sock enthusiasts set up the self timer and don a pair of heels. Some use props. Here’s a little photo essay of my pinstripe jaywalkers.

Yarn: Lorna’s Laces, pinstripe colorway
Needles: Size 1 circulars
Gauge: 68 stitches around leg, about 4 fewer on bottom of foot where I used plain stockinette.

The classic bend and snap…

A puppet show with a friend …

Dancing on the ceiling…

Still learning how to use the self-timer…

They're really beautiful, no matter how you snap them... I may have make myself a pair!

I have a fairly violent aversion to the shots I see where the camera looks down into the lap of the person, where the feet are in 'butterfly' (or baddha konasana) position. Likewise, I hate the ballet #2 position when shot straight-on. I'm quite passionate about this! So I only like self-timer shots, feet together or angled to the side, or in a pinch, a massive bend and shoot.

Love the way the pinstripe colorway worked with the Jaywalker pattern!

I'm with Minty--I don't care how people take their sock pictures as long as there's no butterfly!

You're inspiring me to re-embrace my stripy LL jaywalkers....

I love this post! It *is* a nightmare figuring out a good shot for socks isn't it? My last sock shots involved me lying on my back on the bed, feet in the air and holding the camera out, hoping for the best :)

PS LOVE your Jays.

Sock puppet! Sock puppet!
They're awesome any way you shoot 'em. And might I add that those are some damn slender ankles, especially for a pregnant lady?

I usually do the self timer, though I'm not so good at it. Very cute socks!

Nice documentary. I'm particularly a fan of the puppet show.

my mom was a puppeteer at one time... I don't think it's normal to spend that much time backstage at puppet shows, haha. Great socks! I like all the photos... whatever you feel like doing in the moment works for you!

What handsome socks! I love the length. I often use a variation of the bend-and-snap - sitting on the stairs makes it easier to get a direct shot without assuming a yoga pose. And then there's the old standby - prop the feet on the table.
